Mr Cohen was awarded a Commendation when he received his Medical Degree from the University of Liverpool. Following this he completed Higher Surgical Training on the Mersey rotation, before embarking on Complex Hip and Knee Replacement Fellowships.

Mr Cohen was appointed as the John Charnley International Arthroplasty Fellow at Wrightington Hospital, in addition to national and international travelling fellowships and visitations to Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA; Musgrave Park Hospital, Belfast; Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford and The Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham.

Mr Cohen has published and presented nationally and internationally and was the recipient of the Jacques Duparc Award from the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics & Traumatology. Mr Cohen lectures and teaches on a number of meetings and courses nationally and has been awarded a Diploma in Clinical Education from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Mr Cohen provides a patient centred Hip and Knee Replacement service at The Highfield Hospital, Rochdale, Manchester. This includes complex primary hip and knee replacements for arthritis, developmental hip dysplasia and avascular necrosis, and revision surgery for infection, aseptic loosening and instability. Using an enhanced recovery programme, he is able to reduce the length of hospital stay following arthroplasty surgery, whilst maintaining comfort and aiming to achieve low complication and mortality rates, as well as excellent PROMS and NJR data.

Mr Cohen has been the Hip and knee Replacement Lead Surgeon for the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group at Fairfield General Hospital since 2019, one of the largest Joint replacement centres in the UK. This includes managing the activity in the unit and chairing the MDT meetings.

Mr Cohen also runs an NHS consultant led adult and paediatric Trauma Service at the Trauma Unit at The Royal Oldham Hospital, which includes the management of periprosthetic and articular fractures of the lower limb. With a Diploma in Clinical Education, Mr Cohen has been actively involved in surgical training at all levels both locally and nationally. This includes his current roles as Educational and Clinical Supervisor to Specialist Surgical Trainees and Foundation Year Trainees at The Royal Oldham Hospital, and as Clinical Lecturer for the Foundation Year Doctors at Pennine Acute NHS Trust.

Mr Cohen was appointed an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the School of Health Sciences, University of Salford Manchester, for his ongoing work and teaching in the fields of Hip Surgery and Biomechanics.

Experience

  • Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon: Mr Cohen has provided the best care for his patients for over ten years as a Consultant Orthopaedic Hip & Knee Surgeon.
  • Hip & Knee Surgery: Mr Cohen’s hip and knee training took place in secondary, tertiary and fellowship centres, providing him with the ability to manage a wide range of conditions. He has the skills to perform complex primary hip and knee replacements for arthritis, developmental hip dysplasia and avascular necrosis. He is able to use both cemented and uncemented hip and knee replacements, with and without bone graft, modular systems, megaprostheses and custom made implants. Mr Cohen is fellowship trained in revision hip and knee surgery, including bone grafting. Mr Cohen’s hip and knee replacements are performed using Enhanced Recovery techniques, which reduce the length of hospital stay following surgery, whilst maintaining comfort and aiming to achieve low complication and mortality rates, as well as excellent PROMS and NJR data.
  • Trauma Surgery: Mr Cohen performs all aspects of routine paediatric and adult general trauma surgery including management of open fractures, intramedullary nailing (including flexible nailing of paediatric fractures), external and internal fixation and Damage Control Orthopaedics. He particularly enjoys managing periprosthetic and complex intra-articular fractures of the lower limb.
  • Academia: Mr Cohen has been involved in audit and research resulting in many presentations, publications, prizes and awards including the prestigious Jaques Duparc Award at the 10th EFORT Congress 2009. A great deal of his work has lead to the benefit of patient care and health care process improvement.
  • Teaching and Management: Having received the Clinical & Education Supervisor Certificate (Level -1) from the Mersey Deanery, Mr Cohen was awarded a Diploma in Clinical Education from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in December 2012. He was the Mersey representative for the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association (2006-2009) and an Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor. Mr Cohen has lectured and examined for Liverpool and Nottingham University Medical Schools and has been a faculty member on a number of national and regional courses and meetings. He is an undergraduate final year medical student Supervisor for the University of Manchester and a Clinical Supervisor to Core Surgical Trainees at Pennine Acute NHS trust. am currently involved in the FY1 and FY2 Teaching programmes at Pennine Acute Hospital NHS Trust, and am a Clinical Supervisor for Core Trainees and Final Year Medical Students from the University of Manchester. Mr Cohen lectures the Foundation Year Doctors at Pennine Acute NHS Trust and has taught the Orthopaedic Specialist Trainees on the North West Regional Teaching Programme. He is also an Interview Panel Member for Trauma & Orthopaedic Specialist Training National Recruitment.

Training Appointments

Hip & Knee Fellowships

  • Hodgkinson Arthroplasty Fellow: Wrightington Hospital. Mr Cohen worked alongside Mr John Hodgkinson, Past President of the British Hip Society, continuing to develop his understanding and surgical skills of hip, knee and revision arthroplasty.
  • John Charnley Arthroplasty Fellow: Wrightington Hospital. A highly sought after International Fellowship with the National Clinical Director for Musculoskeletal Services, Mr Peter Kay, and Medical Director of the National Joint Registry, Mr Martyn Porter. Mr Cohen gained invaluable insight and surgical skills in the management of primary, complex primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty.
  • Belfast Visitation: Musgrave Park Hospital, Belfast. Mr Cohen visited Professor David Beverland’s Arthroplasty Unit, one of the leading joint replacement units in the UK. He gained an insight into the technical detail relating to his research and an understanding of the department’s excellent efficiency.
  • Oxford Visitation: Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. The designer centre of The Oxford Partial Knee Replacement where Mr Cohen developed his interest and skills in this procedure.

Trauma Fellowships

  • Nottingham Trauma Fellow: Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham. Mr Cohen worked closely with Professor Chris Moran and managed acute orthopaedic trauma in this Level 1 Trauma Centre. This involved management of poly trauma, complex trauma, severe open fractures and paediatric as well as routine adult injuries.
  • Travelling Trauma Fellow: Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA. One week secondment with Dr Malcolm Smith in a busy level 1 Trauma Centre providing an insight into polytrauma care and fracture management in the USA.
